Obituary for James Spivey Bangs

James Spivey Bangs, 90, died on February 20, 2017 at Eatonton Health and Rehab Nursing Home in Eatonton, GA, after complications of dementia. Jim was born in Bluffton, Indiana on September 6, 1926 to Owen R. and Elizabeth S. Bangs. He graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Electrical Engineering. While at college, he was an active participant in the Purdue University Men’s Glee Club and enjoyed singing all his life. He served in the US Navy during World War II as an Electronic Technician’s Mate, Third Class, and he served for the last eight months of WWII in the Pacific on the USS Shangri La.
Following his military service, he completed his college degree and took a job with General Electric in Syracuse, NY, where he was a Heavy Military Engineer. While in Syracuse, he met and married his wife, Caryl, in 1957.
Later in his life, he was an active volunteer with the Junior Achievement Club in Syracuse, as well as volunteering with YMCA Adventure Guides for several years. He spent many years working with The Gideons International, distributing bibles to students at both LeMoyne College and Syracuse University, where he enjoyed talking with the students on both campuses each week.
Jim, along with his wife, was an active member of the North Syracuse Baptist Church. He loved to volunteer at Camp-of-the Woods each summer, greeting guests at the gate. He also loved sailing on Lake Pleasant (NY) and would be out on the lake for hours each breezy day!
Several years ago, Jim and Caryl moved from Fayetteville, NY to Eatonton, GA in order to be closer to family and receive care for his progressing dementia. The family would like to thank all of his caregivers, both in NY and in GA for their great love for Jim, and for their great care over the years.
Mr. Bangs is predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Caryl Irene Gifford Bangs; parents, Owen R. and Elizabeth S. Bangs of Ligonier, Indiana; half-brother, Rex Bangs of Churubusco, Indiana; and many other aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Surviving are his children, Barbara Jean Bangs Krueger (William) and David Lyle Bangs; grandchildren, Jennifer E. Krueger Irvin (Brad), Stephanie K. Krueger Coleman (Isaac); step-grandson, Joshua Pace; great-grandchildren, Adley E. Irvin and Autumn R. Coleman; as well as several cousins living all over the United. States.
Calling hours will be at Eaton-Tubbs Fayetteville Chapel, 7191 E. Genesee St, Fayetteville, NY on Saturday, February 25 from 9:00-11:00am. The funeral will follow the calling hours at the funeral home. Burial, with military honors, will follow in the Fayetteville Cemetery, Fayetteville, NY.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of James Bangs to The Gideons International Processing Center, P.O. Box 97251, Washington, D.C. 20090-7251
