Bruce H. Ackerman, 88, of Minoa, NY passed away on June 25, 2016. He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas C. and Stella B. Ackerman; brothers, Wendell “Butch”, Kenneth “Spider”, Charles and Thomas Ackerman; and sisters, Mary Squadrito and Paulette Ackerman.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Grace; son, David of Long Island, NY; brothers, Lyle of North Syracuse, Carl “Pudge” of East Syracuse; sisters, Patricia Sojdak of Baldwinsville, Sandra (Vincent) Potter of Kirkville, Linda Van Alystyne of Columbia, SC and Vanessa Kallet of Martville; and several nieces and nephews.
Bruce was a Navy veteran of WWII and a Marine veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of THE CHOSIN FEW, an exclusive Fraternity of Honor of those who served in the Epic Changjin (Chosin) Reservoir Campaign in North Korea during November-December 1950. He was a life member and Past Commander of the Korean War Chapter of Syracuse and Siman-Parise VFW Post #9596 of Collamer. He was also a life member of The Greater Syracuse Marine Corps League #224.
Bruce was an employee of Carrier Corp. for thirty-seven years. He retired as Supervisor of Utilities in December 1990.
Bruce was an active participant in the Masonic Fraternity. He was raised in Port Byron Lodge 130 in 1962 and affiliated with the former Onondaga Lodge No. 802 in 1965. He served as Worshipful Master in 1971, and Trustee 1972-1975 and 1988-1991. He served as Empire State Mason Representative 1973-1975; Assistant Grand Lecturer 1975-1976; and District Grand Master of Onondaga District 1976-1977. During his term of office, he served as President of the Mid-State Region District Deputies Association. He was a member of Memorial Lodge No. 648 in North Syracuse at the time of his death.
Bruce joined Scottish Rite in the Valley of Syracuse in 1975. He served as Thrice Potent Master of the Lodge of Perfection 1972-1973 and as Commander-in-Chief of Consistory 1991-1993. He was coronated 33 Degree Honorary Member of Supreme Council on September 24, 1991 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Bruce also served as Patron of Onondaga Chapter #144 Order of Eastern Star 1970 and 1980.
Calling hours will be Tuesday June 28 from 4 to 8pm at the R.H. Schepp & Son Minoa Chapel, 6530 Schepp’s Corners Road, Minoa. Funeral service will be Wednesday June 29 at 10 am the funeral home. Burial will be in Pine Plains Cemetery in North Manlius.
