Obituary for Carol B. Gilligan

Carol B. Gilligan of Manlius, NY passed away peacefully on August 29, 2016, two days before her 79th birthday at Loretto Health & Rehabilitation in Syracuse, NY after a recent diagnosis of lung cancer. Born and raised in Plainfield, NJ, Carol graduated from Plainfield High School in 1955 and began a 17-year career with the New Jersey Bell Telephone Company. She married John Francis Gilligan in 1969 and the two made memorable trips to Bermuda, Europe and Africa. In 1972 they moved to Onondaga Hill in Syracuse, NY and then quickly settled in Manlius, NY. Carol worked as a banker for Seneca Federal Savings and then JP Morgan Chase until her retirement in 2006. Carol and John loved to host friends for bridge nights and dinner parties where Carol served her famous clams casino, Aunt Annette’s salad and monkey bread. Known to her nieces and nephews as “Pretty Aunt Carol” she always made sure to have a supply of $2 bills for gifts to the children. Carol was an avid tennis player and in retirement found great joy and made many friends volunteering at the Manlius Library, participating in classes at the Manlius Senior Center and visiting with friends at her book club. Carol loved visiting Chicago to see her son’s family, where she had fun shopping, attending cooking classes and enjoying wonderful dinners out on the town. Carol is survived by her husband John of Manlius, NY; son Patrick, daughter-in-law Elizabeth (Dietz) and grandchildren Jack and Sophie of Pacific Palisades, CA; and her sister Betty Kochan of Moscow, Idaho.
The family will greet friends on Friday, September 9th, from 5 to 7PM at the Newell-Fay Manlius Chapel, 8171 Cazenovia Rd., Manlius, NY 13104.  The funeral Mass will be offered at 10 AM on Saturday, September 10th at Immaculate Conception Church, 400 Salt Springs St., Fayetteville, NY 13104.
The family requests no flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 6725 Lyons Street, P.O.B. 7, East Syracuse, N.Y 13057 or the Manlius Library, 1 Arkie Albanese Ave., Manlius, NY 13104.
